Holidays to Luxor

Ever thought about a break in one of the world’s oldest tourist destinations? Well, that’s what holidays to Luxor offer. The Egyptian city and its location on the banks of the River Nile were regularly frequented by the ancient Greeks and Romans thousands of years ago.

This trend has continued, and such is Luxor’s heritage that it is now widely referred to as ‘the world’s greatest open air museum’ in light of the huge number of historical artefacts the city accommodates. From the tomb of Tutankhamen to the Valley of the Kings and the Karnak Temple, Luxor is the hub of one of the most celebrated cultures on the planet.

Luxor holidays tend to come in two forms. Because it’s a city, Luxor is an excellent destination for a long weekend. What’s more, all the historical sites are located in it or close by; much can be packed in during a relatively small space of time.

However, many people opt for a one or two week break in this most fascinating of cities in order to make the most of their time and explore at their own pace. Luxor is split into three different areas – the main part of the city next to the world’s longest river, the Nile; the ancient city of Thebes, the settlement where Luxor was founded; and the wonderful ruined temples of Karnak.

Spending time in the city allows holidaymakers to venture off the beaten track and immerse themselves in the legendary Egyptian culture. Many are fascinated by Luxor’s bazaars – permanent marketplaces where holidaymakers have a wealth of souvenirs to choose from.

Every visitor to Luxor is encouraged to have a go at haggling. It’s something of an art form for those on Egypt holidays and, like most things, practise makes perfect. You could end up with some real bargains to take home, such as bowls and candle holders handcrafted in the Valley of the Kings.

A wide variety of holiday accommodation exists in Luxor and you can be sure of finding somewhere that reflects your taste and budget. There may be no sea nearby, but most hotels have excellent swimming pools. What’s more, the city is never ‘out of season’ – thanks to its warm climate it is popular with tourists all year round. Arguably the best time to visit is between October and May, with temperatures ranging from an average of 21 degrees C in the winter to 35 degrees C in the summer.

Like most major cities, Luxor is easy to get around thanks to its large number of taxis and excellent local bus network. Among the most popular transport routes is along the Nile, where holidaymakers can travel from one side to the other using one of the local ferries or by hiring a small water taxi. The banks of the river are also home to some of the city’s finest restaurants.

If you’re looking for cheap Egypt holidays you won’t find too many more attractive destinations than Luxor. Why not transport yourself back to ancient Egypt and see what all the fuss is about?
